Photo Project: wk:5 - contact sheets

CONTACT SHEETS:

TEST STRIPS:
Lesson Aims:
To discover the photographic process of producing contact sheets and test strips from a 35mm negative.
To produce in your teams contact sheets and test strips to be placed in your books
To extend and challenge yourself further by producing a first print from your negatives

MAIN TASK:
Follow the steps below to produce a negative contact sheet and test strip:

  1. Cut your negatives into strips of 6 negatives
  2. Set your enlarger hight to the size of a big 10x8 piece of paper
  3. Place cut negatives onto photographic paper in the darkroom and place glass on top
  4. Set enlarger to F11 and 2 secs (making sure filters are turned off)
  5. Place a sheet of black card over 4/5ths of the photographic paper
  6. Expose for 2 secs
  7. Move the card across so it covers 3/5ths and expose again
  8. Move again to 2/ths, expose and then move to 1/5h and expose
This will ensure you can see what time to use for you final contact sheet.  Now use a big sheet of paper, set the enlarger to the right timing and expose.

This contact sheet can now tell you what images to use and will help you sort out which pictures your group are to use.  You only need 1 or 2 each, so share.

Now make your first print, using the same process as above.

EXTENSION:
Make your first print, suing the setting you have learnt from your investigations.

PLENARY:
Discuss our progress - set work to be completed and discuss how to reach higher marks, using assessment criteria below:
