We will produce a range of camerless photography experiments
Reflect on our work
Record our materials, techmniques and processes
Demonstrate our ability to reflect on our work and progress
Lesson Objectives (during these lessons you will):
- Start each lesson by making, discussing and evaluating interesting compositions
- Produce in class for 40mins each lesson at least 3 photograms
- Select a range of at least 3 differing but appropriate materials and processes for each of the two camerless photography techniques
- You will recap and review your ideas at the beginning, during and at the end of each lesson
- You will record the potentials and limitations relevant to your intentions in your sketchbooks
In groups order objects on your table into an interesting composition. Explain your choices,
It could be on a theme
On a colour
On shapes
Or just random but aesthetically pleasing
Starter: 5 mins - making your first composition
- In 4 set groups make a composition that fits on the page in front of you. Is it connected by a theme, or just atheistically pleasing, or both!
- Explain your designs.
Task 1: 10 mins Individual composition
Teacher to show students chemicals, explain rules and conditions of use, answer any questions on learner concerns
- Individually arrange 3 different compositions on the paper supplied, in 10 mins with your objects. Once again they just be connected by a theme, or atheistically pleasing.
- Photograph it and record it further by drawing round them and annotating your ideas on your page.
Teacher to show students chemicals, explain rules and conditions of use, answer any questions on learner concerns
Task 3: Photograms: 40mins
- After discussing the examples of photogram compositions above, create your own by following the teacher demonstration in the darkroom. Notes on the process include:
- check the safe light is on and safe light filter placed over the enlarger lens
- place your paper on the enlarger bed in the correct position
- set the enlarger aperture to F8
- set the position of the enlarger making sure the height of the enlarger is correct and the light is focused and covers the paper
- place your objects on top
- set your timer to 5secs
- EXPOSE!
- place your exposed paper into the developer for 2mins, stop for 30secs, fix for 4mins, water for MINIMUM 5mins
- leave to dry - collect later
Improving your prints.
- Has the process worked?
- Could you use less time / more time?
- Could you move the objects into another position to get a better image?
- Could you mask or stop the timing half way through and move the objects before re-exposing?
Recording your prints.
- Write in dark/soft pencil on the back - the timings, aperture
- Record in your sketchbooks any thoughts on: potentials of the process (what could you do next and how?) / limitations (what has the process stopped you doing, or been difficult to achieve?).
